The best sunscreen is the one you'll put on every day. In Lagos heat that usually means something light, non-greasy and comfortable under makeup. Here's how to narrow it down.
Check the basics
- SPF 30 or higher for daily wear; SPF 50 if you're outdoors a lot.
- 'Broad spectrum' or a PA rating (PA+++ or PA++++) for UVA coverage.
- Water-resistant if you sweat heavily or swim.
Pick a texture for your skin
- Oily or combination skin — gel, fluid or 'matte' finishes; look for oil-free or non-comedogenic on the label.
- Dry skin — lotions or creams with hydrating ingredients like glycerin or hyaluronic acid.
- Sensitive skin — fragrance-free formulas; mineral (zinc oxide / titanium dioxide) options are often well tolerated.
- Deeper skin tones — modern chemical or hybrid sunscreens and tinted minerals avoid the white cast some older mineral formulas leave.
Apply enough
Most people use too little. Aim for roughly two finger-lengths of product for your face and neck, applied as the last step of your morning routine, and give it a minute to set before makeup.
Reapply when it matters
If you're indoors most of the day, a good morning application goes a long way. If you're outside, reapply every two hours — a sunscreen stick or spray makes this easy over makeup.
